The #1 Way You Can 'Do for Others' This MLK Day!
“Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?’” — Martin Luther King, Jr.
Martin Luther King Day is not about getting a “day off” to hit the slopes in January.
Instead, ask yourself, what are you doing for others?
And more importantly, with whom, how and where will you choose to spend your time?
Being of service and volunteering your time are noble acts of kindness that will never be overlooked. There are great ways to get involved in your community. However, we’d like to open your heart and minds to thinking about “doing for others” a little bit different.
Now, we still believe you should volunteer at a local soup kitchen, donate to local, regional, and national charities or give a few hours of your time to those in need. But, what we’re suggesting is that giving your time and attention is the #1 way to “do for others.” This Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, turn off your phone. Put away any distractions and simply listen:
● Listen to your children talk about their day.
● Listen to an elder tell you about the weather for the 5th time today.
● Listen to a relative that needs to talk.
This “doing for others” is absolutely free. It doesn’t cost you a penny to put on a pot of coffee or boil water for tea and have a conversation. We encourage you to have an open heart, an open door and allow someone to talk. Give them your time and attention. It’s quality time and “speaks” volumes. You’ll be amazed at how listening will brighten someone’s day. Your time and attention are one of the most valuable gifts you can give. It’s one of the best ways you can show you care.
Your time is the most valuable commodity on the planet. When you give someone your time and attention, it goes a long, long way:
● It makes people feel heard.
● It makes people feel seen.
● It makes people feel valued.
So if you’re looking to “do for others” this MLK Day, think of someone that could use your time and attention.
That is how you can honor Martin Luther King, Jr. and all that he stands for.
Your gift of time and attention could possibly save a life, change a life, or inspire someone to take action towards their dreams. Now it’s your turn. In the comments, tell us one way you’ll be sharing the gift of time and attention today!
